NASO met with new MLSP leadership team
The Minister of Labour and Social Policy Biser Petkov and his team met with representatives of national disability-related organisations at the MLSP on 16 May 2017. The topic for discussion was the reform in the medical expertise of people with disabilities and the related proposals submitted by the national disability-related organisations. Minister Petkov introduced his team, consisting of Deputy Ministers Zornitsa Rusinova, Ivaylo Ivanov, Rositsa Dimitrova, Sultanka Petrova, and outlined the main priorities in their future work. Briefly, the representatives of national disability-related organisations also sketched their achievements in recent years and their current activities. On behalf of the National Alliance for Social Responsibility, Mr. Georgi Georgiev presented the main directions in the work of NASO, its priorities and current tasks.
In connection with the topic discussed, Mr. Georgiev underlined the need for reforms in the conducting of a medical expertise, not only in terms of the lack of funds, but also with the focus on bringing this reform in compliance with the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The reform should ensure people with disabilities easy access to the necessary expertise and the relevant expert medical commission, as they are currently experiencing considerable difficulties in getting access to this body and the procedure itself makes them feel humiliated, he added.
Mr. Georgiev also stressed the need to distinguish the problems of people with disabilities from those of the poor and not to mix these two groups with households falling into poverty due to disability. At the end of the meeting the attendees agreed that decisive actions should be taken by all parties involved to support disability-related reforms.
